Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is given to relieve pain in the tooth caused by an infected or abscessed tooth pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue found beneath the hard dental tissues. It is made up of nerves, connective tissues and blood vessels that nourish the tooth and help it grow. The root canal procedure involves the removal of this pulp, in the instance where it gets infected. In case you are wondering how the tooth is nourished after the removal, then you’ll be surprised to know that, it gets nourishment from the neighbouring cells and tissues. This keeps the tooth healthy and fed with the required nutrients even after the pulp removal.

The pulp can be damaged by deep decay due to untreated cavities or due to chips or cracks in the tooth. Moreover, it can result from multiple dental procedures on the same tooth, which end up damaging the tooth structure. This allows bacteria to infiltrate the pulp and infect it. Furthermore, injuries or trauma to the tooth can also cause damage to the pulp. To reverse the effects of these causes on your teeth, you must consult your dentist as soon as possible to save your teeth.

Before having your root canal treatment, we recommend that you consult with our dentists. During the consultations, the dentist performs a physical examination of your mouth and examines the infected tooth. He may also recommend a series of tests including a dental X-ray to assess the infection and the extent of the damage. The dentist then gives you a diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment for it. In addition, he also gives you the guidelines you need to follow before the procedure. These measures include taking the prescribed medication and avoiding smoking for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet is a key requirement.

The root canal treatment involves a 45 minutes procedure. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and sedation to prevent pain. This procedure is done in a couple of stages, which are:

Anaesthesia- This helps numb the infected tooth and the surrounding tissues. The dentist gives local anaesthesia and sedation medication to keep you calm, ease pain and prevent anxiety.

Dental dam placement-  Before beginning root canal treatment, a small rubber dam is placed over the area. This isolates the tooth and keeps it dry during the procedure.

Access holes- The dentist makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp.

Pulp removal- Tiny dental instruments are used to remove the nerves, blood vessels and tissues inside the tooth.

Shaping the canals- Once the pulp is removed, the pulp chamber and root canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped.

Filling the canals- The empty canals are then filled with a flexible, rubbery dental material called gutta-percha

Sealing the tooth- Next, a temporary dental filling is placed to seal the tooth and prevent bacteria from re-entering.

Placing the final restoration- The dentist recommends the placement of dental crowns to protect the treated tooth and restore normal bite. These crowns are custom-made at our clinic.
